Alonso the new favourite

Fernando Alonso is the new favourite for the title © Getty Images
Fernando Alonso is the new favourite to win the Formula One drivers? title, said David Coulthard in his column for The Telegraph.
?He is the man with the momentum and, on the same basis that I backed Mark Webber to win the title before Korea, is now my favourite to claim the world title in Abu Dhabi on Nov 14. ?When the cars are so evenly-matched you have to back the man in possession. Especially when that man is a two-time world champion and arguably the finest driver of his generation.?
The Mirror?s Byron Young drew comparisons between Alonso and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher as the Spaniard bids to become the sport?s youngest ever triple world champion.
?Like Schumacher, Alonso accepts no opposition within his team. Ultimately he fell out with McLaren over their refusal in 2007 to bring Lewis Hamilton to heel. ?He returned to Renault on condition he was No.1, only to be at the centre of the Singapore cheat scandal - engineered to hand him victory. ?The Spaniard has always denied involvement but at the German GP in July he was brazen enough to radio Ferrari to rein in team-mate Felipe Massa so he could start the winning streak that has taken him to the brink of history.?

Vettel on brink of title after victory

Sebastian Vettel moved to the brink of a second title by winning the Singapore Grand Prix, but Jenson Button's runner-up finish meant the German was one point shy of the championship lead he required to wrap things up for 2011. Vettel utterly dominated the majority of the race. The Red Bull man was a second per lap faster than his pursuers at first, and though the pack closed up with a mid-race safety car after Michael Schumacher clipped Sergio Perez and was launched into a violent accident - from which he emerged unhurt - Vettel had a cushion of backmarkers behind him at the restart and was eight seconds clear again after just one lap.

Wanting To Use

Airbrushed car with Model Master Lacquer decanted paint. So the question is that the paint has some orange peel and i wanted to lay some Model Master No#2017 Gloss Clear Lacquer over it. Does this lacquer turn yellow over time? If not should i wet sand before clearing ? and if so what grit sandpaper should I use ? And what ratio should i use to thin the lacquer ?  50 to 50 ratio? This is my first airbrushed car .

I know buy Donn's DVD but funds are low right now.

THE NEW " CONTEST CARS " ISSUE

You know I use the handle " oldcarguy " because of how long I,ve been doing this . I have to say , I not only saw very finely done models , BUT , the level of workmanship in 99% of the cars shown are levels way above what was considered a good job back in the eighties and earlier . I also was comforted by the fact that imagination in modeling is very much alive . This is one of the key ingredients in modeling  . IMAGINATION , especially in that dream car or a personal version of what a person thinks the car should look like is astounding ! There were some that looked damaged ,but , even then the car was well done . I have enjoyed my copy and only wish it was 200 pages longer ! I know that would be impossible , BUT , one can wish right?         oldcarguy

Journalists shocked at Korea award

Scarecrows adorn the entrance to a barren Korean International Circuit © Getty Images
Two leading Formula One journalists have expressed their surprise at Korea being named the best grand prix promoter of the season at the FIA?s annual prize gala in Monaco last Friday. The Korean Grand Prix received the Race Promoters' Trophy despite the event taking place at an incomplete facility with few race fans in attendance and team members and media staying at disparagingly dubbed 'love hotels'. "Korea. Korea? KOREA??!! I must have been somewhere else," said Times correspondent Kevin Eason on Twitter. Daily Mirror journalist Byron Young added, "The Korean GP, complete with event and flight chaos, shoddy hotels and things I won't mention, won the race promotors? trophy. Why?"

67 Plymouth Barracuda WIP

I've been working on my Cuda for several weeks now and decided to post my work in progress. I started with a Bandit resin 67 Barracuda fastback kit. I'm using a AMT Muscle 69 Barracuda as a doner for the interior and glass. I'm using a 383 Gison Engine and have replaced the fender walls by the engine with ones from a 71 Coronet. I still have to finish rubbing out the Dupli-Color Flame Red on the hood and top. Then I will spray a couple coats of MM Ultra Gloss Clearcoat. I'm using wheels from the Dodge A-100 pickup. Comments and ideas welcome.

Five ways to improve F1

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images
In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

1969 Biscayne 2-Door Sedan

A couple of years ago, I purchased a Model Car World Resin 1969 Chevy Biscayne 2 Door Sedan Transkit.  There is a local car I was quite interested in doing a similar model of, which was a 1969 Chevy Biscayne Sedan, equipped with a 427/390 HP V8, a 4-speed transmission, and little else. When MCW announced it was going to market a '69 Biscayne, I couldn't wait fotr it, as I had their '65 and '66. I finally received their '69, but I was a little disapointed in it, as the rear side windows and the angle of the back window was the wrong angle. That did not stop me from building it, as I made a few modifications in the side windows and the roof by pie cutting the rear window and slanting the rear window, as well as re-shaping the side windows, and replacing the drip mouldings. The transkit was designed to be combined with the AMT '70 Impala kit, which I used with very little mdification

I wanted a sleeper look to the car, so I painted it a non descript aqua, with a black vinyl interior, featuring a tilt column, a " Sport Steering Wheel in Rosewood", and a AM/FM radio. The running stock are chevy rally wheels, with "police" caps, and no trim rings, mounted on red lines. Under the hood is a ZL-1 Aluminum 427/430 V8with a 4-speed, and a 4:11 posi. Yes, this car could have come from the factory as a C.O.P.O. , like what came from a performance oriented  dealership like Berger, Yenko, Nickey, or Baldwin (Motion Performance).

Everything I put on the car as available in 1969 from the factory, even though its not shown in the brochure. I have a fertile imagination, and would love to have such a beast as a one -to- one car. It would be a blast to drive.

Report: Volvo going all four-cylinder or less

Volvo badge

If it's an engine with more than four cylinders, Volvo doesn't want it in its lineup. Within the next 10 years, the Swedish automaker plans to eliminate any engine options greater than four cylinders in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions. No more five- and six-cylinder mills. In their place, Volvo will employ three- and four-cylinder units in both gasoline and diesel form.

The new engine family is called Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA), and the automaker says the new powertrains will be nearly 200 pounds lighter than its current engines. In addition, the new mills will improve fuel economy by 35 percent. That will be an impressive boost, and Volvo believes it can accomplish this feat without a reduction in performance.

The 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines will start to make their way into production models by 2013. By 2020, the entire lineup will be filled with them.

Boardman keeps Knockhill win

British Touring Car driver Tom Boardman has kept his reversed-grid Knockhill race win, despite being penalised for his clash with Jason Plato. The Special Tuning Racing SEAT Leon runner took his first BTCC victory at Knockhill early this month, but only after pushing Plato's Chevrolet Cruze off the track at Duffus Dip.

Bernie Ecclestone - No plans to put the brakes on

© Getty Images
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian as his 80th birthday approaches, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone speak out about a variety of subjects, from the future of the sport to Margaret Thatcher, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, democracy, football and what continues to drive him.
The way I feel at the moment, why stop? I do it because I enjoy it. And yesterday is gone. I don't care what happened yesterday. What else would I do? People retire to die. I don't get any individual pleasure because we don't win races or titles in this job. I'm like most business people. You look back at the end of the year and you see what you've achieved by working out how much money the company has made. That's it.

Boehner: Lets Build Highways to Transport Fossil Fuels

Shedden triumphant in race two

Gordon Shedden strengthened his British Touring Car title challenge by winning the second race at Rockingham this afternoon. Shedden's Honda ran third early on, once the fast-starting WSR BMW of Nick Foster had fallen back from the place after being blocked by a wall of Chevrolets at the first corner. Whereas the Cruzes of Jason Plato and Paul O'Neill had driven away in race one, this time they struggled with the extra success ballast of 45kg and 36kg respectively.

Webber concedes title fight is over

Mark Webber has conceded he is effectively fighting for second place in the championship despite team-mate Sebastian Vettel's claim that there is still a long way to go in the title battle. Vettel took his eighth win of the season at Monza last weekend to extend his lead in the standings to 112 points over Ferrari's Fernando Alonso with six races left. Vettel would be champion in the next race in Singapore if he wins the race and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is second, Webber or Jenson Button finish lower than second, and Alonso finishes outside the podium.

Sliding Sideways Through The Desert: A day spent drifting with Michael Essa [w/video]

Filed under:

michael essa gsr autosport bmw z4 drift car

Drifting isn't a real sport.

So sayeth the peanut gallery that thinks drifting is just a bunch of wheel-spinning youngsters who've watched way too many selections from the Fast and Furious library. I'm here to tell you that it's very much a sport, and the men and women behind the wheels of their sideways machines dance the thin line between aggressive fury and smoke-filled poetry.

I'm sweating my ass off in the middle of the Mojave Desert for my first lesson on drifting, and my teacher for the day is none other than Mr. Michael Essa. He's late, it's hot and I'm surrounded by a pit road filled with random examples of rear-wheel-drive Japanese machinery in all the colors of the rainbow. Plus three more hues that I've never seen before.

Who exactly is this guy I'm waiting for? If you're already a fan of drifting, than you know that Professor Essa is the bespectacled pilot of the GSR Autosport BMW Z4. Essa is a professional drifter who competes in the Formula Drift series alongside the likes of Vaughn Gittin Jr., Rhys Millen and Samuel Hubinette, amongst others. Mike is passionate about his sport, skilled behind the wheel and also capable of ducking under the hood and turning some wrenches. At the moment, however, I don't know any of this... because I'm melting into the asphalt of the Streets of Willow, and Essa is still late.

Webber: Schumacher pushing limits

Mark Webber believes Michael Schumacher was "pushing the boundaries" during his fight with Lewis Hamilton at the Italian Grand Prix. The seven-time champion was involved in an intense battle with the McLaren driver in the early parts of the Monza race while they battled for third position. Schumacher's driving was labelled as "pretty harsh" by McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh after the German changed lines more than once to defend his position

Chrysler Confirms that the Fiat Doblo Will Come to the U.S., Will Launch as a Ram in 2013

Liuzzi blames Kovalainen for crash

Tonio Liuzzi said he was "just a passenger" in the first-corner carnage at Monza - for which the HRT driver was judged responsible and given a five-place grid penalty for the next race in Singapore. Liuzzi's HRT collected Vitaly Petrov's Renault and Nico Rosberg's Mercedes at the first chicane after spinning down the grass, causing a traffic jam that delayed many other drivers. But though the stewards decided that Liuzzi was to blame, he said he had been squeezed onto the grass by Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen

Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric Concept Car

Noted Mercedes tuner, Brabus, may be famous for all their high-powered tuning programs, but their penchant for power doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have eco-friendly bones in their bodies.

Somewhat surprisingly, Brabus is tapping into their inner affinity towards the environment with the introduction of the new BRABUS Technology Project HYBRID. The vehicle hybrid program is based on the Mercedes E 220 CDI, but instead of its usual powertrain, this particular car has been fitted with four electric motors. There’s one motor on each wheel and each carries 50 kW (67 horsepower) apiece in Eco mode and up to 80 kW (107 horsepower) each in Sport Mode. The four electric motors are then joined by a 56 kWh lithium-ion battery that further increases the car’s total output to 320 kW (435 horsepower) and - prepare yourself - 2,360 lb/ft of torque. Whoa.

The numbers translate to performance figures that include a 0-62 mph sprint time of 6.9 seconds, an ECO-mode top speed of 118 mph and a Sport-mode top speed of 137 mph. As a hybrid, careful attention has to be paid on the car’s driving range and the BRABUS Technology Project HYBRID returns a very impressive 217 miles on the dot with the battery taking 90 minutes to recharge at a 380 V three phase grid and up to five hours through a normal 220 V AC outlet.

Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric Concept Car originally appeared on topspeed.com on Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:00 EST.
