California lawmakers will soon be on the hunt for cheaper wheels thanks to new legislation. A perk of their job was a publicly-funded ride, costing taxpayers an average of $7,300 per year per vehicle. Now, the lawmakers will have to make do with a $300 monthly transportation allowance.

California is a state that's looking to drastically cut its spending. According to the California Citizens Compensation Commission, this move will save $2.3 million over the next five years. Prior to the legislative change, taxpayers were shelling out for the vehicle lease, gas and insurance. The most expensive vehicle serving as a state-funded ride? Senator Ron Calderon's Cadillac STS, which was slurping down fuel at an average rate of $83 weekly.

The lawmakers have a few months left to enjoy their vehicles. The new rule takes effect in December of 2011.
