Ford Fiesta turns 35, hits 15 million units, celebrates
Ford kicked off the Fiesta Movement in 2010, but the little hatchback's history goes back 35 years. In 1976, Ford launched the Fiesta, and since then, it's gone on to sell 15 million units. The latest iteration joined the family in 2010, and Ford's keeping it fresh for 2011 with new colors and upgrades to the highest trim level.
Mars Red and Fashionista are the new hues on the Fiesta color palette, and the Fiesta Titanium adds a dash of chrome to the grille, new wheels, and a woven headliner. You can also order partial leather seats for it.
Check out the progression of the Ford Fiesta in the gallery and click past the jump for the full press release.

Jaime Alguersuari - classic F1
Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari is the latest grand prix driver to pick his five all-time favourite races for BBC Sport's classic Formula 1 series.
The 21-year-old Spaniard has been impressing on the track in recent races, putting to one side speculation about his future with strong drives into the points in the last three races - Canada, Valencia and Silverstone.
Alguersuari is a singular character - outspoken and interesting, with a particularly idiosyncratic approach to his Twitter account.
He has applied that uniqueness to his choice of races for this feature, which we use to whet your appetites for the action to come at this weekend's German Grand Prix.
In chronological order, his choices are as follows:
A no-holds-barred, flat-out battle between F1's then top two drivers - Fernando Alonso and Michael Scumacher. It was reminiscent of a similar fight between Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen six years previously. Alonso, driving for Renault, put huge pressure on Schumacher throughout the race, so much so that the Ferrari's engine eventually broke.
The result did not quite secure Alonso a second consecutive championship but it did put him in a virtually unassailable position - and he made no mistake at the final race of the season in Brazil. This is the first time we have shown highlights of that Japanese race.
Alguersuari remembers that "there was a big casino with the rain and you had whatever Force India was then - Spyker maybe - actually leading the race and a lot of people crashing". He's right. This was a spill-a-minute race, won by Alonso, who was driving for McLaren. More on that in a moment.
"Because it was my first grand prix," says Alguersuari.
It was also the scene of a brilliant victory by Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren car that had started the season more than two seconds off the pace.
The 2010 Australian Grand Prix
This race will long be remembered for Jenson Button's inspired victory for McLaren. It was also enlivened by Alguersuari's brief but exciting tussle with Michael Schumacher, when the Spaniard re-passed the German legend after being overtaken.
"It was the first time I had really had a battle with someone in Formula 1," Alguersuari says. "It was the start of something good, of what was a big season for me in 2010. It was the basis of my championship."
Sebastian Vettel led Mark Webber to a comfortable Red Bull one-two but Alguersuari remembers the race because it was the one in which he scored his first F1 points. "That was very nice and something I will not forget," he says.
----------------------------
As always, we choose one of these races to highlight. This time, we have gone for the 2007 European Grand Prix, which was held at the Nurburging, the track that hosts this weekend's German GP.
It was an incident-packed weekend, starting from the moment Hamilton crashed his McLaren at high-speed in qualifying after a wheel came off, leaving the Englishman in 10th place on the grid, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on pole and Hamilton's team-mate Alonso beside him on the front row.
The Nurburgring, high in the Eifel mountains, is famous for its capricious weather - and this race was no different. After rain hit on the first lap, Spyker's Markus Winkelhock, making his one and only grand prix start, held the lead. The race was then stopped after four laps before Alonso and Raikkonen's team-mate, Felipe Massa, battled it out for the win.
In the dry, Massa pulled out a lead of about five seconds only for Alonso to cut it back in the closing stages. The late rain then gave Alonso the chance he needed.
After both men had fitted intermediate tyres, Alonso was much faster than Massa, the Spaniard passing the Brazilian with a superb move around the outside of Turn Five, the two men banging wheels as the McLaren went through.
The result moved Alonso to within two points of Hamilton in the championship - and set the stage for a cataclysmic sequence of events at the next race at Hungary.
The highlights of that thrilling Nurburgring race are embedded below - Murray Walker is the commentator as he did a one-off stand-in race for BBC Radio 5 live that weekend.
There are also links to short and extended highlights of last year's German Grand Prix, which was held at Hockenheim. During the controversial race, Ferrari asked Massa to hand the lead to Alonso, now his team-mate, to boost the latter's title chances.

A selection of the classic races will be shown on the BBC red button on interactive television in the United Kingdom. These will be Japan 2006, Europe 2007, Malaysia 2010 and extended highlights of Germany 2010.
Satellite and cable viewers will be able to watch them from 1500 BST on Wednesday 20 July until 0855 on Friday 22 July, when our broadcast of free practice starts.
Those watching via Freeview will be able to see the classic races between first and second practice on 22 July, from 1035 until 1255.

Report: Marchionne insists Jeep Wrangler to stay American-made
Filed under: Truck, Jeep, Off-Road
In the wholly owned Fiat stable are its eponymous brand, along with Lancia, Abarth, Maserati and Alfa Romeo - plus, as of relatively recently, all of the Chrysler brands. According to Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, of all of those brands, the one with the greatest global cachet is Jeep. Marchionne believes that Alfa had global chops as well, but Jeep remains "first and foremost."
And while Marchionne remains keen on creating global production synergies with his expanding automotive empire, there is at least one sacred cow. According to a new Ward's Auto report, the compulsively sweater-clad CEO has a few words that will make builders of the Jeep Wrangler in Toledo happy - he thinks the legendary SUV's American heritage is too important to risk assembling it in any other country. This is heartening news, as recent chatter had referred to growing global demand putting a strain on the Ohio plant, leading some to think that a satellite production facility could be established elsewhere in the world.

Revell ' 57 Bel Air - Saskatchewan Special
So I decided that from now on I'm not gonna post anything as a w.i.p.
until I at least get to this stage, where body and chassis are joined
without me destroying anything in the process.
Having built nothing since my ' 62 Impala last fall except for a Revell
' 55 Chevy American Grafitti diecast, I was kind of in a bit of a slump.
Building a tri five seemed somewhat therapeutic, so since I'd yet to tackle
the Revell Bel Air kit I chose that one.
I wanted to do a nice box stock build of an austere Bel Air, like the kind
you would have seen around here back in the day, without the extra bright
work around the windows and as plain looking as could be.
Since the lip for the rocker molding was part of the body and I didn't feel
like sanding it off, that was the one exception I made with the trim.
We'll call it "dealer installed" in this case, he he.
I had just enough Model Master Tropical Turquoise left from the One Fifty
I built a couple of years ago to give the body a few coats, paint both sides
of the firewall and the dash, and POOF! that was it for that can. Since I'd
ordered it by mail which is the only way I could get some, I ended up
doing the rest of the interior with Boyd's Pacific Blue, which is close enough
that you'll never see the difference. I lucked out with the dark turquoise by
finding some Duplicolor Bright Aqua at the auto supply store, and it's just
about a dead on match for the factory color. It's just too bad the kit decals
are gray and not black, which would have made the whole interior color combo
factory correct.
I cut out the grill and sprayed the bumper with Alclad, as I'll be using the
photo etched pieces from my last AMT ' 57 Pro Shop kit for this one.
Lot's to do yet, but I'll get there before too long hopefully.
And finally, note the added clutch pedal. Yep . . . . I hadn't even got the
interior done before the whole notion of box stock went right out the bloomin'
window.
More to come . . . . . . .
Regards,
sfd

Report: Hyundai union threatens strike as Kia union turns back wage proposal
Filed under: Hyundai, Kia, Earnings/Financials, UAW/Unions
Hyundai and Kia are having a great 2011 so far, with sales numbers reaching new heights seemingly every month. The summer sun might disappear, however, as storm clouds appear to be looming on the South Korean horizon. According to Reuters, Hyundai's home market management is working with the worker's union to negotiate a new wage deal. Talks are reportedly not going very well, and the union has walked away from the table ahead of a final round of discussion before everyone breaks for a holiday. Upon their return from vacation, the union officials have stated that they are ready to move to a strike if Hyundai doesn't compromise on the wage talks.
It's a similar story at sister brand Kia, as union leaders have vetoed a new wage deal. Many are reportedly surprised at this move, since the deal included record bonuses, a 5.17 percent salary raise and stock. The issue, however, doesn't seem to be focused on the financial figures but rather over a proposed two-shift system.
For the past two years, Hyundai and Kia have successfully negotiated labor meetings so as to avoid strikes. There is still time left to keep that streak alive, but it appears that serious compromise will be required on both sides of the table.

Rising star Ricciardo relishing Hispania opportunity
At Silverstone
For a man making his grand prix debut this weekend, Daniel Ricciardo finds himself with an unusual amount of Formula 1 experience.
The Australian Red Bull protege has driven three different F1 cars in the last 12 months.
He piloted Red Bull's championship-winning RB6 car at a test for young drivers at the end of last season, and then became Toro Rosso reserve in 2011 before he was loaned out to Hispania as their race driver for the rest of this season just in time for the British Grand Prix.
Despite going from the fastest car on the grid to the slowest in the space of a few months, Ricciardo is viewing his promotion to Hispania race seat as a big step in the right direction.
"The car can't be compared to the Red Bull but it's still an F1 car," said the 22-year-old with an ear-to-ear smile. "It does some amazing things speed-wise and the potential under braking is still pretty strong. I'm definitely having fun.
"I was only 18 when I was picked up by Red Bull, and I knew there was still quite a few years to prove I could go through the categories and get into F1. It's only become a reality now."
The wet and windy weather that buffeted Silverstone on Friday meant Ricciardo did not have the best conditions in which to show his capabilities during his first full day of practice.
Ricciardo is hoping to impress at Silverstone this weekend. Photo: Getty Images
But he made a solid start, closely matching team-mate Vitantonio Liuzzi in the morning and beating the experienced Italian by 0.209 seconds in the afternoon.
All drivers use the man on the other side of the garage as their initial benchmark but Liuzzi presents an interesting comparison for Red Bull as they assess Ricciardo. The team know just how far Liuzzi's talents reach because he drove for Red Bull in 2005 before joining Toro Rosso.
Does Ricciardo's future with the Red Bull family hang on whether he can regularly beat the Italian?
"It wouldn't hurt," responded Ricciardo. "I'll drive as fast as I can and where I end up will determine my future.
"Tonio is quite experienced and has spent more time with the team than I have. Going by the pace today I was quite happy to be in a competitive range and we'll see how it goes in the dry.
"The plan is to be around and to race in F1 for many years to come so with that I have to be fast and to prove myself."
Ricciardo asked fellow Aussie Mark Webber for some advice this weekend and there is even speculation that Ricciardo could be fast-tracked into Webber's seat in 2012.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has even compared Ricciardo's situation to Damon Hill's route into F1.
Hill stepped into a race seat with Brabham halfway through the 1992 season when he was a reserve for Williams. The next season, Hill was promoted to a race seat with Williams and four years later he won a world title.
So, does Ricciardo fancy a seat with the fastest car in the field?
"Having a connection and a link with Red Bull, it's somewhere in the back of my mind and it would be nice one day," said the Australian, who handily already lives near the team's headquarters in Milton Keynes.
"The news I got last week has filled up quite a bit of space in my head so I will just try and enjoy that at the moment.
"My main objective this weekend is to finish the race. Of course I'll push and try and get as much as I can from the car.
"I don't think we'll be fighting with Red Bull or Ferrari but I don't plan running at the back and having my own race. If I can be a few more places up the grid then of course I'll go for it. It would be nice to be involved in a good fight and I'll be pushing through all the race."
At the end of his first media session as an F1 racing driver, Ricciardo made another unusual gesture as he gathered up the dictaphones in front of him and handed them back one-by-one to each member of the media.
"There are a few more people here than I thought," said Ricciardo, with another trademark grin. "It's nice that people are taking an interest."
It's fair to say that there are plenty of people watching this space. After all, who's to say Ricciardo won't emulate former Red Bull protege Sebastian Vettel and rise through the ranks of Toro Rosso and Red Bull to become a world champion?

Do you complain or do you build?
I have seen quite a few complaints about various kits since I've been on this forum in the last 6 years. I have seen builders who say that they can and will correct the inaccuracies of a kit, get part way through it, and quit. Some builders have disappeared from the forum altogether. I have thought about this recently and it has gotten me to wonder...do you complain about a kit or do you just build and complete it to the best of your ability? I don't want to hear complaints about the kits, do you just build it or not.
I have built some of these kits that are less than accurate, have various flaws, and generally don't look good out of the box. I recently completed AMT's '68 Roadrunner which has it's flaws, many I fix to the best of my ability. Several years ago, I built Revell's reissued AAR 'Cuda which garnered it's share of controversy during my build of that kit. I am currently working on converting Revell's '71 'Cuda into a '70 'Cuda using the original (green box art) AAR 'Cuda front and rear parts. I have always believed that if you are not part of the cure, you are part of the problem! It is a challenge to complete some of these kits and I like to be challenged every now and then.
So, my question to you folks is...do you complain about a kit or do you just build it, finish it, and make look as good as you can?

Toyota FJ Cruiser TRD

When we are looking for a sport utility vehicle that can negotiate the urban jungle as well as the real jungle, the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser TRD (Toyota Racing Development) is an outstanding option. This descendant of rugged Toyota off roaders is no longer a one trick pony and has added urban practicality to its impressive off road reputation. Toyota has made the FJ Cruiser TRD a utilitarian option that can do both jobs supremely well whether it is navigating the parking lot at the supermarket or crawling over a sand dune in the Sahara.
Of the different versions and options offered for the vehicle, we picked the the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser with the TRD package because it offers quite the bang for your buck ($33,461). For that price, we got a genuinely brilliant off roader that can seat five adults, but more importantly, receives a sportier feel with TRD 16-in. 6-spoke alloy wheels and hefty BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires. Then there’s the TRD-developed, high-speed?tuned Bilstein shocks for extra support.
The FJ is a relative newcomer to the market (introduced in 2006) . Now, the FJ is aiming to tackle the suburbs as well the trail. Let’s see if the FJ can truly be the best of both worlds.
Hit the jump to see if Toyota was successful.

Brand: Toyota
Medium: TV
Ad Agency: Saatchi and Saatchi

Campaign:"What Happens After Practice"
What We Like: Going to back when Toyota launched its very amusing campaign for its Sienna "Swagger Wagon" TV ad and Youtube videos, the Japanese automaker has been looking for ways to engage consumers by not taking its very practical models so damn seriously. The Prius is an unabashed market success. It defines the hybrid segment. And it is the market leader in fuel economy. It does everything but run on actual crunchy granola in the gas tank. Prius ads do not need to play up the fact that they are super fuel efficient. Everyone knows. So, as we showed you a few days ago, turning to this approach of having NBA star Steve Nash talk about how driven he is, as if it was a Nike ad, is a creative homerun. His deadpan monologue about how competitive he is, talking about making constant adjustments and improvements to his game, while driving a Prius and finally edging out a grandma for a parking space is a way to stand out from the usual hybrid ad that merely screams the highway fuel economy rating. Gotta love Nash's trash-talk dance at the end too.
What We Don't Like: Tough one here. The agency nailed it.
Strategy: Prius has owned the hybrid market. But it is undeniable that Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Dearborn, MI automaker's coming C-Max all hybrid brand will begin to cut into Prius's perceived leadership. If there is a weakness in the Prius brand at all, it is that it is widely viewed as a car for celery eaters. Honestly, the current Prius is a bit bloodless to drive. Pumping some hemoglobin into it via clever advertising that doesn't take the car so deadly serious seems like a decent idea for a brand that is this mature.

General Lee Confederate flags.
I've posted this here as I didn't want to hijack MavDogg's posting is Muscle cars re "Replica General Lee build" but can someone explain what the issue is with showing Confederate flags? I know this must be because of the Civil War, but why is it that offensive? I know in the Military modelling world Nazi flags are frowned upon by some and maybe with just cause if their family had suffered at the hands of the sadistic Nazi regime, but what was so offensive during this piece of American history?
I also don't want to start a South V North issue here, but I'm an Aussie and I'm just curious as to the roots of this issue, so if this gets out of hand, moderators please delete this thread if need be.
